Costain Galliford Try – M1 Smart Motorway Upgrade

360 KVA Electricity Connection

Costain Group PLC , the engineering solutions provider, had been appointed by Highways England to deliver three smart motorway schemes in a Costain-led joint venture with Galliford Try worth in excess of £300 million.

The project was to increase traffic capacity on the M1 between junctions 13 to 16, 16-9 and 24-25 by allowing traffic to utilise the hard shoulder, the construction of a concrete centre reserve barrier and the introduction of roadside technology to monitor traffic flows and communicate with drivers using improved electronic signage.

Utility Site Services were engaged by the joint venture to deliver a 360 KVA electricity connection and 3 Phase Half Hourly metered supply to be utilised at a site compound facility at Junction 15a where the project offices, welfare and mechanical plant equipment are stored.

Due to the relocation of the site compound at short notice from the original intended site at junction 15, we needed to mobilise and deliver the connection with urgency in order to meet the customers programme of works and minimise on the reliance of an onsite generator used to provide power at such short notice.

The Scope of works Included liaising with the highways authority to undertake significant traffic management to enable a HV connection on a busy A road servicing the motorway, the supply and installation of a 400KVA transformer, Switch-gear and LV cable to a free-standing metering kiosk.

The project was delivered four weeks in advance of an organic connection project life cycle saving the customer significant diesel costs.
